One Lesson Book The Graphic Design

No matter who actually you are, a graphic designer, web designer, visualizer, concept developer, animator or layout artist. If you belong with word “Graphic Design”, this is for you.

It’s about the time when I was in initial stage of learning graphic design. For me it was all about experimenting and playing with colors. Starting with a white canvas in Adobe Photoshop and ending with an illusion, which can’t be predicted correctly, what does it denote? But yet it was a designed graphic.

Web Site Navigation

Once a visitor gets to your web site, you want to make sure they can find what they are looking for quickly and easily, or they will just go elsewhere. If a web site is easy to use and understand, visitors will come back time and time again.

Using intuitive navigation techniques will greatly improve the usability of your web site, and therefore user satisfaction and return rates. By intuitive navigation, I mean some sort of menu, map or list that is instantly understandable to most visitors to your web site.

Can You Trust Your Webmaster?

Last week a friend of mine told me about a problem that she was having with her webmaster. She no longer trusted this person who was in charge of her ecommerce website.

Their relationship is similar to most webmaster – client relationships: the webmaster understands the complexity of web design and search engine placement and the client relies solely on her/his expertise. The client’s lack of technical knowledge and dependence can make them an unwitting victim of unscrupulous webmasters. That is exactly what happened to my friend.

Web Design: Photograph Copyright Issues

When designing a web page, you need to be careful about what pictures you use. Many people simply grab them off Google - they see a picture they like, and they put it on their web site. Unfortunately, copyright law protects the person who took the picture as the owner - if you’re not careful you could end up facing a lawsuit.

Copyright law gives rights to anyone whose creativity results in some expression - in the case of photographs, that means the photographer. If you don’t have express permission to use a picture or image on your site, you ought to be careful about doing so. Someone, somewhere, probably owns it, and they may not be too happy if they find it on your site. Many webmasters find out the hard way - they use hundreds of pictures, straight from google, without dealing with the owner. They end up facing a suit, forced to defend it or pay much more money than they made running their site back to the owner.

3 Secrets to a Faster Website

People hate waiting. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Yet people persistently want to add the latest and greatest to their website to be flashy (no pun intended) and to set themselves out from the crowd. But if you go overboard, you'll not only be set out from the crowd, you'll also never get a revisit from your website visitors. Why? Because each new effect or "toy" slows down your website. Here are 3 important rules and speed tweaks to keep in mind while developing your next page:

  • Use Flash sparingly. I've seen entire websites done purely in Flash. Well that's great, but it doesn't say a thing about their design or programming skills. It can also (depending on connection speed) takes ages to load. Even simple mouse-overs are now done in Flash, when it can very easily be "faked" using background images and CSS. Use it for small things where it can be really effective, otherwise, don't. For your customer's sake. Banners and ads can be done in flash. A design rule to think about is, if someone was browsing your site and they had Flash disabled or the plug-in not installed, would it seriously affect their browsing experience? Would any bit of content, functionality or other critical component be seriously affected? If so, you should re-think your Flash usage big time.
  • Website graphics overload. This one I pay special attention to. Unless you and your entire company has super fast internet connectivity, and you are certain at least 99% of your target audience also has bleeding fast internet, optimise your images! Really, what's quicker and more effective? A 32-bit colour image at maximum resolution that hinders a page and overcrowds it or an 8-bit (256 colour) decent resolution image that really enhances your site and your visitor's experience? I hope I don't have to answer this one for you. My general rule of thumb is, if you want to use an image and it's less than 10k-15k, you're in the good. If it's over, try cutting down the DPI, the colour bit setting and/or use another format e.g.: GIF to JPG to PNG. People using dial up internet will find it a nuisance, especially if there's 10+ images over 15kb that need loading, it's just going to take ages, and if it nearly 7 seconds or over, everyone starts getting impatient really quickly. Oh, and specify your image size (if your web editor hasn't done so already). This allows your web browser to continue loading and displaying your content while the images themselves are still downloading.
  • Javascript overkill. JavaScript has it's place. Heck in the right circumstances, it's hard to beat. It allows dynamic page rendering, page interaction and user customisation, all from the user's browser without having to resort to cookies or creating user logins. However, some people like to go overboard, and add butterflies that follow your mouse cursor, or graphical page transition effects and using javascript to pre-load more images for bandwidth consuming mouse-over effects, and other non critical, annoying, in-your-face features. It's not needed people.

Essential Web, Part 1

When it comes to having a website that will hold peoples attention nothing works better than good, usable information. Visitors are asking themselves "What can I learn here?" or "How will this site help me?". Providing good content is essential to running a good, frequently visited website. With that in mind you should also have content that is updated regularly. If you are going to provide content through a content provider, a weekly update is the LEAST, you should sign up for. Unless you have mix of content (daily, weekly and monthly). If a vistor comes to your site and sees the same content for two or three weeks straight with absolutely no change, they will quikly lose interest. You want to hold on to your visitors attention.

Using a client of mine as an example, Crossway Community Church is not only my client, but where I worship. The website I created for them (www.crosswayicc.org) provides daily devotionals, a "Bible in a Year" area that is updated daily, a daily "bible in sixty seconds" area, and a monthly article update from a well known Christian actor. The daily content keeps our vistors coming back and the anticipation of the new monthly content also drives traffic to our site.

Web Design Essentials

Websites are created for many different purposes, such as, selling products, offering services, or sharing information. The one thing all websites have in common is the need to attract visitors and keep them coming back on a regular basis. In order to accomplish this you need to have a web design that is pleasing to look at, easy to navigate, and offers good content.

The first thing any visitor to your website sees is the home page. This should be your design starting point. You can expand on it to create other pages, but you always want to keep the design consistent from page to page. In other words if your home page is black and gold, you don't want to do your other pages in red and green. Any graphics you use specifically for your site should blend with the color choices you make. Pleasant colors and graphics will help make your site memorable.

Key Words They Will Find You on the Web

Key words are what people give a search engine to find what they are looking for on the web. You can define your key words before you even start your website.

Say there are a lot of competing web pages mentioning your product - how should a search engine put these pages in order of relevance to a search?

Say there are a lot of competing web pages mentioning your product - how should a search engine put these pages in order of relevance to a search?

Say some pages contained the word once, and some contained the word ten times, and some contained the word between two and nine times.

If all other factors (e.g. number of links from other web pages) were equal, search engines would list those pages containing the word ten times first, followed by those with the word nine times, then eight times, etc., and then those pages containing the word only once listed last.

Let's build up a list of search words for one product. Take tents for an example.

What words describe it?
Here are four words - tent, marquee, marquise, bivouac.

What are its uses?
Camping equipment, holidays, vacations, parties, functions, weddings.

What material is it made from?
Canvas, etc.

What is your brand name?
People may have heard of your brand and may look for it by name. Let's say it's brand name is "Dingo."

Where is it available?
Some products you may sell worldwide, but possible delivery costs could be limiting. People may search for the product in their own area first. In that case your state, your nearest city, and your suburb are required key words. Say your area is Penrith. Your customers may search for Penrith, Sydney, NSW or Australia, particularly if they live outside the city or suburb.

Key Words so far are 24:
Tent, tents, marquee, marquees, marquise, bivouac, camping equipment, holiday, holidays, vacation, vacations, party, parties, function, functions, wedding, weddings, canvas, Dingo, Penrith, Sydney, NSW, Australia. (Include singular and plural, where possible.)

Where should these appear on your web page?

  • Title tag
This is the most important tag which displays at the very top of your browser. Use every key word here. But words here need to be seen also on the web page.
  • Keywords tag
This is now largely ignored by search engines.
  • Description tag
    Same as above.
  • Heading tags
Instead of "Welcome to Dingo Inc." say "Dingo Tents and Marquees"
  • Links to inside pages
Instead of "Products" say "Tents" and "Marquees"
Instead of "About Us" say "About Dingo Tents"
  • Body text
This is where you can be creative. Mix the key words into phrases and sentences. See how many ways there are to describe the products, their use, and where they are.

Examples of Key Words embedded in text:
Pole tents, frame tents, canvas tents, vinyl tents, play tents, event tents, party tents, wedding tents, camping tents, stall tents, large tents, small tents, tent accessories are all at Dingo Tents. Holiday under canvas with a Dingo tent or marquee. Dingo has camping equipment for your next vacation. Dingo tents and marquees are in all sizes. See inside for tent sizes. A large Dingo marquee ensures nothing will dampen your wedding, party, or outside function. Dingo tents and marquees are near you if you live in Penrith or Sydney, NSW Australia. Dingo tents can be delivered anywhere in NSW, Australia.

See how in just the hundred words above it's possible to mention tent(s) twenty times. Provided the key words are embedded in a lot of text, and not repetitive, like "tents, tents, tents," they will count for you. When the text of the whole page with contact details, etc., is considered the proportion of key words to total words will be lower and acceptable. The font can be small but is not allowed to be invisible. Search engines have formulas for discerning where text is the same color as its background.

Search for competing websites and see how many key words they have fitted into their home page. Then try for more key words on your page.

Do all this before you start your own website. We are often asked to redesign someone else's website, after they realize their work of art is not appreciated by search engines. Start out to be friendly to search engines.

Ready? Aim! Color!

First impressions are lasting impressions! Whether buying a house, a book, or even a product from a web site, we buy what looks attractive or reliable from the outside.

Colors, like words, are used to communicate. Color is central to our lives - we rely on color to convey both emotional and psychological impacts that work subtly on the unconscious. For example, when was the last time you went into a restaurant and didn’t eat? Reason? Look at the color combinations - orange, red, yellow! With all of those "hungry" colors, who wouldn’t eat?

ECommerce Web Site Building: Where Do I Start?

Building a web site isn't something that is really cut and dry. There's a huge variety of products and services that can either help you get your web site where you want it or simply confuse you. It's also important that you make the right choices upfront so that you don't end up having to restructure your whole web site because of some problem in your design layout. The level of time investment neccessary for mastery in a lot of these software packages can range from little to a VERY significant amount. Because of this I feel it's important to be lead in the "right" direction to make sure you don't spend time in the wrong areas, or learning some software that might not be all that useful for you later on (*coughs* Frontpage *coughs*).

Where you should start greatly depends on what you plan on attempting to do, and how deep you're going to dive in. For a moderately professional, clean looking web site without a lot of automation or intensive animated graphics you can probably get by with some basic knowledge of html, ability with a good WYSIWYG editor, and an image editting program. On the other hand, if you're someone that's looking to build something that will really wow your audience then you might consider spending some major time and developing some animation skills with a program like Macromedia Flash. I personally always spring for what I believe will bring me the greatest amount of profit with a minimal amount of effort, and because of this I usually end up spending all of my time diving in deeper with ONLY my WYSIWYG HTML editor, and my image editor.

Create Your Own Cash Via E Products!

You may be wondering how you can sell products online that will be profitable but also how you can cut the middle man out of your profits. Then you are looking at e-products. Now you may be wondering what they are and how you can get your hands on them? It is very easy. E-products are products that are created from your own mind with information that you have gained or found out one way or another. Such as an ebook on "how to make the worlds best tuna fish sandwich" or "how to set up your own server". This information is created by you and put down so that it is useful to others who are in need of this information(for those who don't know how to make a tuna fish sandwich). It gives them valuable information based on your own experiences and helps them with the problems they are facing. The best thing about it is that you own any copyright on products you create and they only take a few minutes of your time to come up with.

The important part about e-products is that they must fill a void of information people are searching for. Usually common knowledge doesn't sell as well, such as an ebook on "how to slice bread" might now sell as good as another ebook on "how to make your own homemade bread". People have to feel that they need the product and that they can't find this information anywhere else. So presenting your e-product is a user friendly professional way is also key.

How to Buy Online, With Confidence

So, you’ve decided you’re ready to take the leap into buying online. You know there are risks involved in buying online, and you still have questions that need answers. Well, here is your introductory class. Hopefully, we will have answered all the basic questions when you finish reading this article, and you’ll really be ready to actually buy online. Let’s begin, at the beginning.

Your first order of business is to determine who to shop. Shop only the online storefronts that offer secure processing of your order. Secure online processing refers to the safe transmission of your name, address and credit card information. Generally, this means some sort of scrambling of your information. Most consumers concentrate only on the credit card information, however, with your full name and address really good identity thieves can gain access to your credit information. Buying online can be quite a dangerous proposal if the merchant you purchase your items from does not offer a secure purchase sight. Merchants offering a secure purchase sight will display, somewhere on their homepage, a small lock icon. Usually, there will also be a message that says, “This is a secure order sight.” This lets any online buyer know their order and subsequent credit card information will be transmitted via encryption, with security measures in place that work in conjunction with the encryption coding. It is this single issue that prevents many would-be shoppers, with expendable cash, from buying online. They simply are not willing to risk identity theft in order to buy online.

Digital Library Initiative and The Future

Currently we are very busy digitizing humankind’s written knowledge from books to the digital so it can be made available to the world. This is a very wise move as books can decay over years and out of print books are not available to all. By digitizing the known human written knowledge to the world we can conquer the opportunity barriers of those hard chargers who may not have the resources to achieve the upward mobility they seek.

As we conquer the digital divide we will be well on our way to giving back the knowledge of the world from the entire Library of Commerce to the human race in an easy to read, search and retrieve format available to all. That will be an excellent day for the human race indeed. Recently the Discovery Channel and CSPAN have had shows that specifically address the massive undertaking; taking print in books and putting it into a digital format.

Consider Self Publishing in Ebook Format

Today, more than every before authors are presented with publishing opportunities that have never existed before. This is not to understate the hard work that authors have to go through to get recognition, write great books, and make a full time living from their passion of expression. However, it is to say that today, due to advances in communications technology, authors can now get their books distributed much easier than they could a decade ago. One very popular way that authors are distributing their work is digitally through ebooks. Digital books are gaining so much popularity that even some of the most popular authors in the world have used it to distribute their books. Stephen King for example published “Riding the Bullet” exclusively in ebook format. When this ebook began distribution over Barns and Nobel and Amazon.com there was so much demand for the download that the servers of these two book giants slowed down almost to a halt. People that wanted to download the ebook were put in a large queue with the hundreds of thousands of other who downloaded the ebook as well.

It’s not only big name authors that are finding success in ebooks. We at Ebook Architect have been helping authors create, market and sell their ebooks online for years now with great success. Many of these people are first time authors and are often amazed with the success of their ebook sales. Below are some of their ebook writing tips.

Each day we all face the same challenge. Spam. It doesn't matter if you're a home computer user or the head of IT for a multinational limiting or totally preventing the distribution of junk email to your computer(s) is now a daily chore.

The sheer frustration that spam causes combined with the number of lost man hours adds up to junk email being a very real problem for all involved. You have to filter through all the junk to find your own personal or work email. This on its own is annoying enough. When you consider the security risks from spyware, trojans, diallers and attempted identity theft spam becomes much more than just an annoyance - it becomes a minefield for any computer user.

Bad Online Article Sites

Is there such a thing as bad article websites or sites, which an author should not waste their time posting too? Some say that an author has nothing to lose by posting to free articles sites, which display their works yet I have some consideration you may not have thought of. But they are free to post to you say, while many other sites charge, how can that be bad you ask?

Good points you bring up. You see I have posted over 1600 articles on one site and have about 1200 hours in this project. I of course thinking of this advance did my research on the site and its owner. You see, before I was retired I once calculated how much I made in an hour. Without getting into those numbers, mind you the 1200 hrs. times "X" would be a heck of a lot of money. If the sight goes off line, cannot pay its people or has high turn over leading to issues down the road, I personally have a lot to lose. So, if someone with 50 articles who only made let's say $150 per hour had 37.5 hours into their project that equals $5625.00; If 100 people lose $5,625.00 that is a lot of money. Now back to the time thing, everyone loses a lot of time too. The seconds on the clock determine who wins the next stage in the race you see. I am merely pointing out something that no one else is looking at here.

Additional Categories for Article Websites

Have you started an Article Website and are trying even pleading with authors to post their articles there? Yet you are finding problems trying to compete with category killers like EzineArticles.com. You are not alone, there are so many trying to do this. Some last over two-months before giving up in vane, knowing they will not even make the grade of the second, third, fifth, tenth, even one hundredth site with the most articles. Do not feel bad about your failures as an Article Website Webmaster.

Maybe you can try some different categories, to pick up authors, alternative categories in which no one seems to be cashing in on. For instance How about a; "Miscellaneous" category, kind of like a holding tank for all those articles which do not fit and all those authors who write alternative crap, or lets be nice alternative wisdom articles. Even I myself sometimes feel when I write an article which is an original idea, that it does not belong in a given category, often an opinion about the human endeavor or because I am merely throwing out a crazy idea, which might not even be fully feasible, thus science and education is really way out there? Maybe a “Sci Fi” category, after all there are lots of weirdoes serching UFO subjects and Conspiracy theories. Other sites do not want these nuts writing articles as it gives their site a tainted look and besides they are doing a disservice to science? A miscellaneous category would prove to be a most interesting category and would get a lot of traffic or you could develop a: "Innovations and Concepts" category, for Futurists and thinkers to get their ideas out.

Why Post Articles on Article Sites and Improvements for Them

Some ask why should I post my articles on someone else’s website? Well for one they probably get better traffic. Two, people can read your article and it will link back you anyway. Three, you save bandwidth hosting. Four, because people coming to your sites for information can search the article site for the articles you wrote and others have written and because, they have your content instead of you having to host it, maintain it, build it and make sure all the key words and meta tags are perfectly correct to get the traffic, plus, there is no way you can get the search engine ranking on one article or 50 articles you write that they can.

Articles sites should know that generally people look to the right when reading, but 15% of the people look to the left and over shoot the next sentence start. There are ways to make the reader see those AdSense ads more. For instance place some on the top, some on the right side and have the menu bar below the articles, this way they have to read the article before going to the next page or clicking out. Giving them more time to see the ads. Also easy to load borders around the ads might set them a apart. A study at MIT suggested the eye wants to fill in borders, which do not exist. But if you have a zig zag border which stops and then starts again it makes people look. Also a slight pattern fluctuation on the far side of the ads attracts the eyes. I think article sites need to also cut down the width of the ads too. So the ads are more centered, this is what Main News Papers and Magazines do; Look at the Biz Journals sites. Think on this.

Writing Effective Newsletters

It’s obvious but true that your newsletter can only be effective if people bother to read it. Nowadays we are all drowning in an excess of information that comes at us in all directions and in all forms so this really is the biggest obstacle you have to overcome. To persuade your audience to read what you have to say, you should follow some basic rules:

1. Know your readership
My point here is that a newsletter for internal use will not serve for external readers. The two readerships are totally different. So if you want to target both internal readers and, say, customers and clients, you need two separate newsletters. Internal clients will want to keep up to speed with company developments, know about internal opportunities and hear about company successes and the exploits of individuals. Customers and clients will want to know how your products or services can benefit them. They will also want information that shows your track record and helps position you in the sector—in other words information that builds your trustworthiness and credibility and shows the direction you are going in.

Producing Ezines for Growing Your Business

What an ezine is ?
An ezine is an electronic newsletter sent out by email at intervals of your choice to a list of subscribers. An ezine is a mutual bargain, a kind of compromise between editor and his subscribers.

How comes that ? Let's see :
Every ezine has a topic : marketing, humor, gardening, sports, etc... An ezine can and should contain lots of helpful information and resources related to its topic. Everyone interested to receive these information, subscribe to ezine. On the other hand, besides all above information and stuff, the publisher delivers and materials promoting his business. The bargain I've spoke before is simple: subscribers agree to receive promotion materials altogether with other information they are interested in.

An ezines is an excellent recruitment tool for your business. Let's say you sell books online through your website. If you chose 'new issues' as topic for your ezine, you will recruit more prospects for your venture saying "come here to see the newest books" than saying "come here to buy the newest books".

Ezines are very efficient in business development. From the very beginning I can say that they target the market(s) you are trying to reach with your products and services. As I said before every ezine has a topic. By choosing this topic close related to your business you may be sure that your subscribers are interested by your business as well, because they enjoy the ezines' topic.

I already told you above that ezines are perfect promotion tools by delivering advertising materials to subscribers.

I can tell a day or two about ezines and how they can help to grow a business. I just want to tell you something very important. If you decide to publish an ezine, you must learn that there is a lot of work to producing a quality one. You should pay a special attention to the following items:

  1. How to discover your real audience - the ones who want what you have.
  2. If is better to write your own content than using someone else's.
  3. How to choose an attention-getting, enticing name for your email newsletter.
  4. What popular sections you can choose to include in your own ezine.
  5. Editing in plain text vs. HTML - what you must know before making this choice!
  6. Resources for building your subscriber base fast.
  7. Places to submit your ezine to gain more exposure and more subscribers.
  8. How to sell advertising and the amount of money you'll make.
And the list may continue. Only by reading these 8 points you can see that publishing an ezine means work and abilities. It's hard but not impossible, you may learn by doing, from articles and books or talking with experienced publishers.

Valerian Dinca is editor of Morning Co~free ezine. This is not like other ezines, you get what you need when you need it.

Good News About Getting Published

So you want to get a book published and add "author" to your resume. A decade ago, there weren't too many options for professionals and consultants to get into print. And then, without ready distribution, good luck trying to sell the books.

But all that has changed. Thanks to new technologies, today it is not only possible to produce a professional-looking copy of your book for under $1,000, you can also market the book through reputable sales channels.
